Behold: Domaster & Tetrawing — heroic Nintendobots! Transforming from Game Boy system & Tetris game to robot & bird, and back!

Update 4/11/2012 - Want to see these bad boys mass marketed in major retailers? Then help support the latest CUUSOO entry! If we gain 10,000 supporters — who support by simply joining, voting and commenting, and NOT through donations — LEGO will personally consider having this sold as a real toy!

Update 4/8/2012 - The instructional guide is now completed and ready for viewing on Instructables! Parts list, transformation cycles, and information on obtaining pieces — all included!

The name Domaster is an amalgamation of “Dot Matrix with Stereo Sound”, the blurb written above the screens of old Game Boys. The name Tetrawing was coined by New York burlesque girl Dangrr Doll (@dangrrr_doll on Twitter) who does a nerdy Tetris-themed routine with D20 Burlesque!

This project was the sequel to my popular Nintendo/Transformers crossover, “Plasmashock” the NES Zapper. I spent about a month or so (give or take) working on this Game Boy and cartridge — the latter of the two took freakin’ forever to engineer properly. The final touches of the Game Boy came the custom water-slide clear decals that I printed for the first time ever, and surprisingly didn’t screw up a whole lot (aside from the obvious crooked “Nintendo Game” half above the right thigh of the robot). Also, the “Dot Matrix” label printed out much darker than expected on my laser printer, ergo it’s hard to see — but the blue-on-gray text for the buttons and Game Boy logo look damn fine! As for Tetrawing, his sticker is actually a high-res computer printout on glossy paper, cut apart like a puzzle and decoupaged to his LEGO frame with the help of Elmer’s Glue.

The 2 AA battery blasters are a nice touch, if I must say so myself. It wasn’t really difficult trying to engineer a sturdy but hollow system for the back of the legs to keep the two batteries — if anything, the head and arms took the longest to build on the robot. The arms turn sideways and fold behind the screen, whilst the head is attached to a series of hooks and hinges to fold back. The robot’s feet fold at 90° angles and then slide into the lower legs. The legs rotate and form the bottom of the Game Boy. I used tiles to create the D-pad, A & B buttons, and the Select/Start buttons — which also took some time to figure out — originally I had planned to use thin, small gray bars to be the Select/Start buttons, and even tried using the small headlight clips from Star Wars Clone Trooper helmets.

Plasmashock: Heroic Nintendobot — Transforms from NES Zapper Pistol to robot & back!

Here it is, the final version and high-res display of my newest creation: Plasmashock, the NES Zapper pistol / Transformers ultimate geeky crossover!

For its transformation mechanism, I built it more similar to Megatron rather than Shockwave; both Transformers used their gun handles as legs, only Shockwave formed his arms to make the barrel, whilst Megatron’s arms formed the stock, and his barrel was a separate attachment (which became his fusion cannon in robot mode). Henceforth, when Plasmashock transforms into robot mode, the orange Zapper barrel becomes his side gun!

Some original Transformers (notably Starscream/Skywarp/Thundercracker) would only transform as toys by removing/adding multiple pieces, such as fists and landing gear, whilst others could easily switch back and forth by folding joints — Plasmashock does both; to go from gun to robot, his trigger becomes removed and attached to his head to make face decorations, and the barrel of course separates to make the side gun. Otherwise, the legs fold from the gun handle, the arms are made from the stock, the head rotates and rests inside the chest.

-Baron von Brunk

P.S. - I plan on making a large replica of a Nintendo Entertainment System that transforms into a giant robot, much akin to Metroplex and/or Fortress Maximus! Stay tuned, loyal Brunkamaniacs.

Blacktron II Mobile Suit “Obliteration”

As promised previously, I made a larger and more powerful mobile suit mecha to battle my M-Tron unit — and with an early ’90s Blacktron II color scheme and setup! Behold: Obliteration!

We’re heavy duty.

Standing much larger than its rival Disruptor, this menacing brute is the next piece of equipment made by the Blacktrons to infiltrate the M-Tron mining bases and steal their ore technology! With its handheld plasma cannon, shoulder blasters, arm lasers, chest lasers and stagbeetle-like devil horns, this machine is a force to be reckoned with!

Plasma cannon spewing death on anything that dared protrude!

And now I present to you my army of Blacktron II space pirates outside their new bipedal, plasma cannon-wielding Titanium siege machine!

There will be battle like never before!

… Can you survive it?

M-Tron Mobile Suit “Disruptor”

If you haven’t noticed by now, I have a bit of an obsession with LEGO Space, namely M-Tron. In keeping my fascination with M-Tron combined with my hobby of assembling Gundam models, I’ve created an original Mobile Suit of a vintage fashion!

This project was made overnight in just a few hours, and the Photoshopping took a bit (the hard part was all the glowing)!

Equipped with large Gatling gun and plasma shield, this mechanized plastic beast stands approximately 1 foot tall, and uses mixed parts of various series and ages (including Bionicle for leg joints).

“PORYGON, GO!! Bite off that retarded Slowbro’s head!”

Think back to the golden days of the Pokémon fad. Like most things I enjoy (that everyone else also enjoys), I was a fan of Pokémon long before it was a hot topic craze. In fact, I liked it before it even came to America. When the huge boom of Pikachu and Snorlax merchandise made it to the shelves in 1999-2000, all of the kids at school went into a frenzy as if it’s the new Coke, meanwhile I on the other hand said, “Cool, it’s about time they bring this stuff to mainstream.”

But anyway, enough of my scoffing. When I first got into Pokémon (or Pocket Monsters as it was originally called) in 1998 during 8th grade, Nintendo Power magazine had art sections where readers could draw and submit Pokémon pictures. I flipped through the pages of the Pocket Monster comic book and came to the conclusion that the blocky-looking Porygon seemed easy to draw, and thus I made fan art based on Pokémon #137.

Detailed Weapons Analysis!

  • A - Pulsating Ion-cannon tail
  • B - Folding steel wings
  • C - Underbelly mini-blasters
  • D - 50 Caliber machine guns
  • E - Rocket launchers
  • F - Underwing heavy laser blasters
  • G - Titanium-tipped beak
  • H - Optic sensors with confusion ray generator
  • I - Jet thrusters

When I got around to playing the games in 2000 (both GameBoy and Trading Card Game), I instantly got ahold of a Porygon and donned him my personal favorite. I was the only person I ever knew who used one as a primary fighter, as opposed to the common trainers who merely caught them for the sake of adding the rare Pokémon to their collection. There was always something about Porygon that made him seem really cool, therefore I couldn’t resist making one out of LEGO! Now, as the Pokémon mythos explain, Porygon is a virtual 3-D monster created on a computer and brought to life. Well, if I can write my own rules, then in my personal storytelling, I used my wicked programming skills to hack into the Saffron City mainframe and then altered Porygon’s Poké DNA to suit my needs. The final result: A giant mutant robot Porygon larger than a Cadillac El Dorado, and equipped with machine guns, rocket pods & missile launchers!

- -

- -

In my GameBoy games, I always named my Porygons “Starscream” after my favorite Transformer, who also shares a color scheme similar to my favorite Pokémon. Well, this fancy robot Porygon is nicknamed “Supertzar”, obviously from the totally boss Black Sabbath song! No Mudkip, Lugia, Ho-oh or even a fleet of Unowns can withstand the might of my red and blue beast! For a size comparison, I have added a mini-Mudkip into the shot so you can get a feel of how awesome his size and strength is!

- -

Within his innards lie a highly advanced command console that could put NASA’s Space Shuttle to shame. It’s also got jet engines on the feet to give it that power-gliding boost, as well as folding wings that reveal auxiliary arsenal. In full attack mode, Supertzar’s wing’s emerge and his feet fold backwards for better aerodynamic performance. Its tail contains a pulsating ion cannon to disable the electronic circuitry of electric-type Pokémon. I mean, after all if this thing is now a flying-type, it’ll need a competitive edge against thunderbolt wielding foes! Hey, as long as we’re at it, I’ll go the whole nine yards as to say its eyes can emit a seizure-inducing radio signal to strike confusion into the brains of opponents! I mean, if the original Porygon could in the TV show, then why not?

GPA2m1 - Gundam Pennsylvania 0-2 model 1

Project and article originally created on 5/22/2008, migrated to Tumblr on 10/16/2011

It’s finally here: Baron von Brunk’s personal custom-built mobile suit Gundam! I call it Gundam PA02, or The Pennsylvania Zero-Two, a heavy duty mechanized monster. Standing at a whopping 18” tall, this brick brute is far greater in size than Swedish Fjord Gundam.

- -

- -

PA02 was worked on over a course of a month and a half, with several hours total of construction. A lot of his parts consist of a particular ExoForce set known as River Dragon, whilst others are assorted combined gray colors (both classic gray and bluish) and red pieces.

- -

Now here’s the best part: The primary weapon is a shoulder mounted Gatling gun, which actually rotates its barrels by turning the bullet carousel! Thanks to LEGO Technic parts, PA02’s gun is our wildest Wolfenstein 3D fantasy come true! Of course, the minifig pilot is the bearded yours truly (as seen in the pictures).

-

In addition to the powerful vulcan near his neck, PA02 is armed with a long range beam rifle.

- -

Look closely at its hands: The individual fingers are posable, and can grip things! This is all courtesy of the ExoForce robot arm pieces. Many of my previous mechs had pseudo-hands which merely clipped on to items, as opposed to PA02’s realistic grabbing ability. Also like Fjord Gundam, this mobile suit can move its arms, elbows, knees, shoulders, feet and neck in a fluid-like motion.

- -

-

The lower section and the upper torso were built separately, then combined together eventually. In its initial test, PA02 was too heavy and kept toppling over. This was fixed when I modified his hips and re-positioned the angle of his upper leg joints, to avoid falling. However, it still has stability issues, which I may resolve and fix in the future. As for now, it can stand pretty decent and still pose its body parts at the same time. As of 2009, this monster has been scrapped and his parts have gone towards other various projects.

Fjord Gundam of Neo-Sweden!

Project and article originally created on 3/30/2008, and migrated to Tumblr on 10/16/2011

Ok, I confess; I happen to be one of the few people in the world who’ll admit to being a fan of G-Gundam. Say what you will about the atrocious spin-off series, but it had some decent aspects. Although it lacked the traditional clashing of armies of man-powered robots as seen in previous Gundam installments, the hilarious ethnic stereotypes made up for it (and then some)! As the series tells, every country in the future has a noble Mobile Suit to represent its rich culture in the Gundam championships. America had its flashy cowboy from New York City, Russia had its horrid prison inmate with a unibrow, et cetera

Welp, Sweden, on the other hand got the short end of the stick during the cartoon series. Sweden, an awesome country whose two chief exports are modular furniture and attractive women, as well as being a nation to boast a history of spawning both Vikings and Dolph Lundgren somehow ended up having a crappy looking Gundam which resembled a Japanese schoolgirl, piloted by a tomboi with blue hair! Why did this happen? Well, I care about the Swedes so much that I designed my own LEGO Mobile Suit in lieu of the laughable “Nobel Gundam”. Fear not, fellow meatball eaters, for I have the next best thing to come out of Stockholm since ABBA and Stockholm Syndrome itself: The Fjord Gundam of Neo-Sweden!

Personally, I’m not Swedish (despite the fact that my last name sounds very Scandinavian), however I have common ancestors with them at some point in the family tree. Did you know the Swedish colonist Jonas Jonasson Bronk, founder of The Bronx, New York was one of my kin? Neat, huh?! Anyway, back to the robot; Fjord Gundam has fully movable joints in his arms, shoulders, elbows, knees, and so forth, and even comes equipped with a double-barrelled pulse cannon!

Let’s pretend a second version of G-Gundam comes into play. In the new edition, Fjord Gundam doesn’t take shit from anybody… Especially not some spiky-haired Japanese punk with shiny fingers! The Gundam, piloted by the great Swedish contender named Ingmar Brunkrissla, is a red-bearded man with a longboat tattooed across his beefy chest! He’s ready to pop-in an Yngwie Malmsteen CD in the cockpit music player then layeth the smackdown on those jerks from Neo-Belgium and Neo-Armenia!

Constructed of bricks resembling the colors of its nation’s flag, this Swedish Gundam took about a week of building time. The only hard part, really, was trying to come up with a good method of attaching the upper torso to the waist. The first set of legs were too short and weak, thus the heavy torso often toppled itself over. I had to spend an entire night of reconstructing the legs and hip area to be much sturdier.

LEGO Space, especially the Futurons, is a theme that I hold dear to my childhood. Incorporating my fascination of 1980s space sets and giant robots from Japan, I have created a walking bipedal machine equipped for warfare! I call this metal warrior “the FM34 Sentinel”, for Futuron Mech, and a kickass Judas Priest song. I mean, this mech’s primary function is defense and sentry, after all.

Piloting the mechanized monster through the cockpit is a Futuron astronaut in a red uniform. As a kid, red was my favorite color, and the red Futuron was a minifig I fancied the most (next to the Town police officer, and the glowing Castle ghost). When he’s inside The Sentinel, the pilot’s blue laser assault rifle becomes mounted on the robot’s left arm as a back-up weapon.

With this kind of heavy duty machinery, the Blacktrons don’t stand a chance! The best part is, this robot is fully poseable with 360 degree joints in most spots, such as the hips, knees and waist. Its left arm features a gripping claw, whilst The Sentinel’s right arm is a mounted fusion cannon.
